Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a safe, exfoliative treatment and a highly effective physical exfoliation procedure. It is performed using a sterile, surgical scalpel to gently “shave” the skin’s surface and remove away the outermost layers of the skin. This process is painless and very safe. Physical exfoliation triggers the cell regeneration process and allows products to better penetrate skin. Dermaplaning is also excellent to rid the face of excess fine vellus hairs which can often accumulate dirt and oil and lead to breakouts. Vellus hairs, as opposed to terminal hair, will not grow back thicker or darker once removed.

Will my facial hair grow back thicker?

    • Using a blade to remove the dead skin cells and vellus hair, “does not in any way cause the hair follicles to transform into terminal hair follicles – it is just not possible,”.
The fine vellus hair removed during Dermaplaning are the very tiny hairs that you will see under very close magnification. These hairs sometimes gather make up and trap dirt and oils, which can lead to congestion and breakouts. Removing these hairs will not cause them to return as a terminal course hair as it cannot turn into this hair type. If you have very dark thick facial hair, then you will be contraindicated to Dermaplaning as this type of hair growth is classed as terminal hair.
  • Can I use other products?
    • Because this procedure removes up to 3 weeks of dead skin cells that have accumulated, a Dermaplane facial will effectively last for at least a month before another procedure may be required. We recommend you return when the hair returns, and the dirt and oil begin to collect once again, which is typically 1 to 2 months. Dermaplaning cannot be performed any sooner than 4-6 weeks dependent upon skin type.
  • Are there any side effects?
    • Common side-effects of Dermaplaning include erythema (redness), mild bruising and mild swelling, these are usually very mild. Post treatment recovery time is 24-72 hours depending upon skin type. You may experience some tingling and sensitivity in the treated area for around 7-10 days post treatment. Some redness is to be expected post treatment
